INFORMATION ABOUT GOPHERS

Gopher Habits And Activity

Gopher habits and activity are unique. Gophers spend most of their lives underground. Poor eyesight and the presence of predators on the surface mean gophers prefer to stay underground where they feel safe. Their diet primarily consists of the roots of plants, bushes, and trees, along with seeds from various plants. They thrive in soft soil and well-landscaped areas, which provide their perfect environment for burrowing.

Gopher tunnels are elaborate and complex! These tunnels can travel long distances, often extending under streets, homes, and other structures. Long tunnel systems act like highways, leading into your property from the surrounding areas. Once they establish themselves, gophers create homes underground that include food storage areas, sleeping areas, restroom spots, and drainage areas to handle rain or excess water. They store foraged food in these storage areas for later consumption and for their pups.

When a gopher has been removed from your home, unfortunately, their tunnels often remain. Gophers are territorial, but they readily take over tunnels when another gopher vacates. This is especially concerning when you have a food supply storage area already in place! If you notice gopher mounds clustered in one area, it likely indicates a single gopher. However, if mounds are scattered across different parts of the property, it means multiple gophers are present.

After rainfall, gophers generally become more active. The rain softens the soil, making it easier for them to dig, and it also promotes plant growth, leading to an increased food supply for them.

While gophers do hibernate in colder climates, in San Diego County and Orange County, temperatures rarely drop low enough to induce hibernation. Thus, they continue their activities of digging and eating throughout the year without interruption.

For effective gopher removal and pest control services, call us today! We have the expertise and knowledge needed to manage their activity and prevent gophers from damaging your lawn through our tailored rodent control solutions.
